Eczema Only on One Hand: What It Can Mean

Repeated contact with soap, detergent, solvents, gloves, tools, or water can expose one hand more than the other. Eczema may cause itch, dryness, scaling, redness, thickened skin, or painful cracks. A fungal infection can also produce scaling on one hand, especially when the change is sharply defined or involves the palm. The appearance and pattern help a clinician distinguish these possibilities.

Scratching or rubbing an inflamed patch can leave darker or lighter colour after the flare settles. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation when the area becomes darker.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser immediately and again whenever the skin feels tight. Use protective gloves for wet work, with cotton liners if tolerated, and avoid fragranced products or harsh cleaners. Do not share towels, and avoid self-treating a one-sided scaly rash with steroid cream alone before fungal infection has been considered.

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash persists, keeps returning, spreads, or does not improve after removing an obvious irritant. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, severe pain, or fever, because these can signal infection. A clinician may examine the skin and, when needed, test a scale sample.
