What should you know about mild eczema herpeticum?

Eczema herpeticum is a viral infection involving skin with eczema or another damaged skin barrier. The area may suddenly become tender, blistered, weepy, crusted or dotted with lesions that look similar in size. Fever, tiredness or swollen glands can occur, but their absence does not rule it out. It may be confused with an eczema flare or bacterial infection, so appearance and timing matter.

Arrange same-day medical advice and describe the rapid change, pain, blisters and any fever. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching or popping lesions, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels. A clinician may prescribe antiviral treatment; take it exactly as directed. Do not apply leftover steroid, antibiotic or cold-sore medicine to broken skin unless a clinician has advised it.

Seek urgent care if lesions are near the eye, vision changes, pain is severe, the rash is spreading quickly, you feel faint or very unwell, or a baby or person with reduced immunity is affected. Eye involvement can threaten sight and requires urgent assessment. New crusting, pus or worsening redness can signal a second infection.
