Eczema herpeticum is a viral infection that can spread across areas affected by eczema or another skin-barrier problem. It may cause clusters of painful, similar-looking blisters or punched-out sores, crusting, fever or feeling unwell. It can be mistaken for an ordinary eczema flare or bacterial infection, and the risk is not judged by how familiar the rash feels. Involvement near the eyes is especially concerning because eye complications can threaten vision.

Contact a doctor or urgent dermatology service as soon as possible. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid rubbing or popping blisters, and wash hands after touching the skin. Do not share towels, razors, cosmetics or close-contact items, and avoid close skin contact until assessed. Use only treatments already prescribed for this episode unless a clinician advises otherwise. Home measures such as a cool clean compress may provide brief comfort, but they do not treat the virus.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading painful blisters or sores, fever, marked weakness, eye pain, light sensitivity, facial involvement or symptoms near the eye. Emergency help is appropriate if you feel severely unwell or have trouble staying hydrated. Tell the clinician if you have eczema, because that history changes how a new blistering eruption should be assessed.
