What should you know about eczema heat rash treatment?

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, develops when sweat ducts become blocked, often producing tiny bumps or a prickling sensation in warm, damp areas. Eczema is an inflammatory condition that more often brings itch, dryness, scaling and a disrupted skin barrier. The conditions can overlap in appearance, especially where sweat and friction are present. Skin redness, bumps or a rash alone cannot establish which one you have.

Move to a cool, dry environment and wear loose breathable clothing. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and avoid oily occlusive products over active prickly heat unless a clinician recommends them. For eczema-prone dryness, apply a fragrance-free emollient to damp skin. Do not scratch or scrub bumps. A clinician may recommend topical corticosteroids for selected eczema flares, but these are not automatically suitable for every heat rash or infected-looking eruption. Follow the prescribed amount and site instructions.

Seek advice if the eruption does not improve after cooling, keeps recurring, becomes painful, or makes daily activities difficult. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, spreading warmth, marked swelling, fever, blistering or rapidly worsening redness. A clinician can examine the pattern and choose between barrier care, anti-inflammatory treatment or another approach.

Ask whether the bumps fit heat rash or eczema, which emollient is appropriate, and whether a topical corticosteroid is safe for the affected body site.
