What should you know about eczema caused by heat?

Short answer
Heat can aggravate eczema by increasing sweating, flushing, and friction, although it is not the only possible cause of a flare.

How heat affects eczema
Warm conditions can make sweat sit against sensitive skin. Salt, moisture, and rubbing from clothing may then increase stinging and itching. Rapid temperature changes, hot showers, heated rooms, and exercise can all be personal triggers. Heat rash, contact irritation, and other conditions may look like eczema, so a rash that appears only after sweating is not automatically Atopic Dermatitis. Notice whether symptoms ease when the skin is cooled and the trigger is removed.
Cooling and skin-barrier care
Move to a cooler environment, choose loose breathable clothing, and rinse sweat away with lukewarm water. Pat dry rather than rubbing, then apply a familiar fragrance-free moisturiser. Use a cool compress for short periods and take breaks during exercise. Avoid very hot baths, fragranced sprays, heavy occlusive layers in hot weather, and rough fabrics. Keep prescribed eczema medicine available and use it according to your clinician's instructions.
When to get medical help
Arrange a review if heat-related flares recur, spread beyond usual areas, or continue after cooling and routine care. Seek prompt assessment for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, crusting, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Urgent care is needed for breathing difficulty, faintness, widespread blistering, severe pain, or swelling around the eyes or mouth.

Is heat the trigger, or could this be heat rash or contact irritation? Which products are suitable in hot weather? How should I adjust treatment around exercise? What symptoms require urgent care?

Questions people ask
Can hot showers worsen eczema?
They can dry and irritate the skin, especially when followed by rubbing. Lukewarm water and moisturiser afterward are gentler choices.
Is every heat rash eczema?
No. Heat rash and contact irritation can resemble eczema. Persistent or unusual changes should be assessed.
