What should you know about eczema bumps?

Inflammation can make small areas of eczema swell into itchy papules or larger rough patches. Scratching may make them thicker and more noticeable, while rubbing can cause nearby skin to darken or break. Atopic Dermatitis often changes over time, so bumps may sit beside dry scale, oozing, crusting, or fissures. Uniform bumps after a new product, bumps around hair follicles, or lesions with a different pattern may point to another cause and need examination.

Use lukewarm rather than hot water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Apply a thick moisturiser to slightly damp skin, especially after washing. Cool compresses can help with itch, and loose clothing reduces rubbing. Try not to scratch; press or tap the area instead, and keep nails short. Follow prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment as directed, and avoid trying multiple new creams at once because they can obscure what is helping or irritating the skin.

See a clinician if bumps are painful, rapidly spreading, persistent, or disrupting sleep, work, or movement. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, increasing warmth, swelling, rapidly expanding redness, fever, or yellow-brown crusting. Seek urgent help for extensive blistering, severe pain, or involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals.
