Eczema Around the Nose: Treatment and Self-Care

Because the skin beside the nostrils is delicate and close to the eyes and mouth, use only products intended for facial skin and follow the directions from a healthcare professional. A rash in this area can also have other causes, including irritation, allergy, or a different facial dermatitis, so an examination may be needed if it does not settle.

Atopic dermatitis can weaken the skin barrier, allowing moisture to escape and making the area more reactive. Around the nose, this may cause dryness, redness, scaling, stinging, or itching. Repeated rubbing and wiping can keep the irritation active, especially during a cold or allergy flare.

Perfumed cleansers, cosmetic products, harsh exfoliants, tissues, nasal sprays, and fragranced laundry products may aggravate the skin. Darker marks can remain after inflammation improves; these are often called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and may fade gradually.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a bland moisturiser soon afterwards and reapply when the skin feels tight. A cream or ointment may protect better than a light lotion when scaling is prominent, but stop any product that causes burning or a new rash.

Avoid picking flakes, scrubbing the nostrils, and applying essential oils or fragranced balms. Use clean hands before touching the area, and change tissues gently if your nose is running. Do not use a steroid cream, antibiotic cream, or antifungal product on facial skin unless a clinician has advised that specific product and duration; the wrong treatment can worsen some rashes or irritate thin skin.

If a prescribed treatment is needed, the clinician may choose a short course or a non-steroid option based on the appearance, location, and severity of the rash. Keep using moisturiser as directed even after the redness settles, because the barrier may still be fragile.

Arrange a medical review if the rash keeps returning, spreads, interferes with sleep, or does not improve with gentle skin care. Assessment is also useful when the trigger is unclear or when symptoms begin after a new cosmetic, medicine, or nasal product.

Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, tenderness, pus, yellow crusting, rapidly worsening redness, fever, or painful blisters. Get urgent help if swelling affects the lips, tongue, or breathing, or if the eye becomes painful or vision changes.

Ask whether the appearance fits atopic dermatitis or another facial rash, which moisturiser is suitable for the area, and whether a product you use could be causing contact irritation. You can also ask how long to use any prescribed medicine, which areas to avoid, and what changes should prompt a follow-up.
