Eczema Around the Mouth: What to Know

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that can affect delicate facial skin. Around the mouth, saliva, lip licking, toothpaste, cosmetics, fragranced products, weather, and repeated wiping may irritate the skin barrier. The area may feel tight or sting, and scratching can deepen cracks. Symptoms can overlap with contact dermatitis or irritation from other causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free gentle cleanser, then pat dry. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after washing and again when the skin feels tight. Avoid scrubs, essential oils, fragranced balms, and licking the skin. Use only treatments recommended for facial skin; products suitable for thicker body skin may be too irritating near the lips.

Arrange an assessment if the rash keeps returning, spreads, disrupts sleep, or does not settle with gentle care. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusting, fever, or rapidly worsening pain, because broken skin can become infected.

Ask whether this looks like atopic dermatitis, contact irritation, or another facial rash; which moisturiser and medicine are suitable near the mouth; and how long to use any prescribed treatment.
