What should you know about eczema around lips and eyes?

Atopic dermatitis can affect the thin skin around the eyes and the skin bordering the lips. Irritation may come from saliva, lip products, cosmetics, cleansers, fragrances, airborne particles, or rubbing. The eye area may look dry or swollen, while lip-area eczema can split, sting, or form scale.

Other conditions can resemble eczema, including contact dermatitis, infection, and irritation from licking the lips. Repeated inflammation may leave darker or lighter colour after the flare settles. Dark circles can also have causes unrelated to eczema, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free gentle cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a bland moisturiser or ointment recommended for the area, keeping products out of the eyes. Avoid licking the lips, scratching, fragranced cosmetics, and new products until the skin is calm.

Do not use steroid creams, antibiotic creams, essential oils, or exfoliants near the eyes or lips without medical guidance. A clinician may choose a treatment suited to thin facial skin and check for triggers if the flare keeps returning.

Arrange prompt medical review for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, marked eyelid swelling, or a rash with blisters. Seek care for spreading redness, honey-coloured crusting, pus, fever, or painful cracks. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.
