What Should You Know About Eclampsia Blood Pressure?

Eclampsia can happen during pregnancy, labour, or after birth. Blood pressure may be markedly raised, but a seizure can occasionally be the first obvious sign of the underlying condition. A normal reading at one moment does not make a seizure safe to watch at home.

Pre-eclampsia affects blood vessels and can strain organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys. Eclampsia is the development of a seizure in this pregnancy-related setting. High blood pressure is a warning sign and a treatment target, rather than the seizure itself.

Possible warning symptoms include a severe or persistent headache, visual changes, pain beneath the ribs or in the upper abdomen, sudden swelling of the face or hands, shortness of breath, nausea, confusion, or feeling unusually unwell. Some people have few symptoms before a seizure.

If a pregnant person or someone who has recently given birth has a seizure, call emergency services immediately. Keep them on their side, protect the head, move nearby objects away, and do not put food, drink, or anything else in the mouth. Do not hold them down or leave them alone.

After the seizure stops, stay with them and check that they are breathing normally while help is coming. Tell clinicians about the pregnancy or recent birth, known blood-pressure readings, medicines, headache or vision symptoms, and how long the seizure lasted.

Hospital care may include medication to prevent further seizures, treatment to bring dangerously high blood pressure down, monitoring of the mother and baby, and planning the safest timing and method of birth. A Caesarean Section may be discussed when it is clinically appropriate.

A seizure requires emergency help, whether it occurs before or after delivery. Seek urgent maternity or emergency assessment for a severe headache that does not settle, new visual disturbance, upper-abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or a sudden feeling of serious illness, especially when blood pressure is elevated.

Do not drive yourself after a concerning blood-pressure reading or neurological symptom. Bring your pregnancy records and medicine list if this can be done without delaying emergency help. Symptoms can continue or first appear after birth, so postnatal warning signs also need prompt assessment.
