What should you know about an eChalk hearing test?

In a quiet setting, you may wear headphones and signal whenever you hear a tone. The clinician records responses across different pitches and loudness levels. Speech testing may check how clearly you understand spoken words. An ear examination can look for blockage, infection or other changes that might affect the result.

Reduced hearing can involve the outer or middle ear, such as with Earwax Buildup, or the inner ear and hearing pathways. A result is interpreted with your history, whether one or both ears are affected, and symptoms such as ringing, pressure or dizziness. It does not by itself explain every cause.

Tell the clinician about recent loud-noise exposure, ear pain, discharge, ringing, dizziness and any sudden change in hearing. Follow the instructions carefully and respond only when you truly hear a sound. Ask for the result in plain language, whether the ears differ, and whether you need repeat testing, ear treatment or referral. Do not put objects into the ear to clear suspected wax.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache or neurological symptoms. Prompt care is also needed for significant ear pain, discharge or an injury. Gradual difficulty hearing still deserves an appointment because communication problems can affect daily safety and wellbeing.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a blocked ear, middle-ear problem or inner-ear change, and whether another test is needed. If you have spinning dizziness with hearing symptoms, ask whether Meniere's Disease should be considered and what follow-up is appropriate.
