What should you know about EBV-positive DLBCL?

DLBCL stands for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a cancer of immune cells called B lymphocytes. EBV, or Epstein-Barr virus, is detected inside some lymphoma cells. The result is interpreted alongside biopsy findings, scans, blood tests and your general health; an EBV result alone does not describe the full extent of illness.

A haematology team may assess lymph nodes and organs outside the lymphatic system, then discuss whether the lymphoma is localised or widespread. Symptoms can include painless swelling, fever, drenching night sweats, tiredness or unexplained weight loss, but symptoms vary.

Ask which biopsy features and scan results determine your treatment plan, and whether testing has checked areas such as bone marrow when appropriate. Treatment commonly involves combination systemic therapy, often using chemotherapy; the exact medicines and schedule depend on lymphoma biology, stage and fitness.

If lymphoma returns or does not respond adequately, the team may discuss options such as cellular therapy, including CAR T-cell therapy, or another specialist approach. Keep a record of medicines, fever readings and new symptoms, and arrange practical help for appointments and recovery.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a fever, chills, breathlessness, new confusion, severe weakness, uncontrolled vomiting, bleeding or rapidly worsening swelling. During treatment, infection can become serious quickly when blood counts fall. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, chest pain or sudden neurological change.
