Earrings for nickel allergy: what to know

Nickel allergy is a contact allergy. Skin that touches a nickel-containing earring, post, backing, or clasp may become itchy, red, dry, cracked, or blistered. The rash can appear around a fresh or established piercing and may spread slightly beyond the contact area. Sweat, friction, and a tight backing can increase irritation. A reaction can recur when the same metal touches the skin again, even if an earlier episode was mild.

Remove the suspected earrings and wash the area gently with lukewarm water. Avoid scratching, twisting the jewellery, or applying household products to the piercing. Choose earrings from a reputable source with clear material information; look for nickel-free labelling and avoid relying only on vague descriptions such as hypoallergenic. Keep the area dry and reduce rubbing from headphones or hair. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a short course of a topical corticosteroid is appropriate for the surrounding eczema; do not put treatment deep into a piercing without guidance.

Arrange medical advice if the rash keeps returning, the piercing becomes increasingly painful, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, marked swelling, or a rapidly worsening reaction, because these features can suggest infection or a stronger inflammatory response. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial or lip swelling, faintness, or widespread hives.
