Early symptoms of molar pregnancy

A molar pregnancy develops when placental tissue grows abnormally after conception. Some people have spotting or heavier bleeding, while others notice repeated vomiting, marked tiredness, or pelvic discomfort. Symptoms can overlap with ordinary early pregnancy changes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Assessment may include an examination, pregnancy hormone testing, and an ultrasound scan. The clinician considers the scan findings and hormone pattern together, rather than relying on one symptom.

Contact your maternity team or a gynaecology service promptly if bleeding or severe nausea develops during pregnancy. Keep a record of bleeding, pain, vomiting, dizziness, and fluid intake. Do not take new medicines for bleeding or vomiting without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

If a molar pregnancy is confirmed, treatment removes the abnormal pregnancy tissue and follow-up checks monitor pregnancy hormone levels. Further treatment is uncommon but may include chemotherapy when abnormal tissue persists.

Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, trouble breathing, confusion, or vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down. These signs may indicate blood loss, dehydration, or another pregnancy emergency and need immediate assessment.

Ask what tests are needed, whether the pregnancy hormone level and ultrasound findings fit a molar pregnancy, how bleeding will be managed, and what follow-up appointments are expected. Ask when it is medically advisable to try for another pregnancy.
