Early symptoms of kidney cancer: warning signs

Kidney cancer can be silent in its earlier stages. When symptoms occur, they may include blood-coloured urine, pain or pressure in the side or back, a lump in the abdomen, ongoing tiredness, reduced appetite, unexplained weight loss, recurrent fever, or night sweats. These features can also result from infection, kidney stones, medication effects, or other illnesses.

A clinician may ask when the symptom began and whether it is changing. Assessment can include urine and blood tests, ultrasound or other imaging, and sometimes a biopsy. The findings show whether a kidney mass is present, how it relates to nearby structures, and whether further staging is needed.

Arrange a medical appointment for visible or repeated blood in the urine, continuing side or back pain, or a new abdominal lump. Record the colour and timing of urine changes, pain location, fever, medicines, and any urinary symptoms. Do not wait for pain if blood in the urine is present, because kidney conditions may not hurt.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or persistent blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, severe flank pain with vomiting, faintness, confusion, or fever with shaking chills.
