Early stages of tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils at the back of the throat. It may be caused by a virus or by bacteria such as those responsible for Strep Throat. The tonsils can become red, swollen, and coated with white spots. Earache, headache, tiredness, and reduced appetite may accompany the throat symptoms.

A sore throat is a common presentation of tonsillitis, but the appearance of the throat does not always show whether the cause is viral or bacterial. A clinician considers the full symptom pattern and may recommend testing.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose cool or soft foods when swallowing is uncomfortable. Warm fluids may soothe some people. Avoid smoking and smoky rooms, wash hands often, and do not share cups or utensils. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for any pain or fever medicine.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are severe, recur, interfere with drinking, or do not begin to improve. Antibiotic Treatment is used only when a bacterial cause is suspected or confirmed and prescribed by a clinician.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth. Seek prompt advice for dehydration, a worsening fever, marked weakness, or symptoms that become rapidly more painful.
