Early-Stage Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: Causes

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare, severe reaction in which the immune system damages the skin and mucous membranes. A new medicine may be involved, including some treatments for infections, seizures, pain, or inflammation. The reaction can also follow an infection, and in some people no definite trigger is found. A person’s immune susceptibility, previous reactions, and inherited differences in how medicines are processed may influence risk.

Early symptoms can resemble a viral illness: fever, tiredness, sore throat, cough, or burning eyes may come before a painful, spreading rash. Skin tenderness, blisters, peeling, or sores in the mouth, eyes, or genital area are concerning developments. This condition is not something another person catches through ordinary contact.

If these symptoms begin after starting or changing a medicine, seek urgent medical assessment and take the medicine packaging or a complete medication list with you. Do not take another dose of a suspected medicine unless a clinician who knows the situation tells you to do so; some prescribed medicines should not be stopped abruptly without advice. Avoid applying new creams or taking leftover medicines to treat the rash. A clinician may review recent medicines, examine the skin and mouth, and check the eyes and general health.

Treat a painful rash with fever as an emergency when it is spreading, blistering, peeling, or accompanied by sores on the lips or inside the mouth. Go to an emergency department immediately for eye pain or light sensitivity, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or reduced urination. Early hospital care can help identify and stop the trigger, protect fluid balance, and monitor the eyes, airway, and other affected areas.

Ask which medicine or infection could be the suspected trigger, whether any medicine must be stopped or replaced, and which warning signs should send you straight to emergency care. Also ask whether your eyes need an urgent specialist examination and how this reaction should be recorded for future prescriptions.
