Early stage of ringworm: what to know

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the outer skin, despite having no connection with worms. The patch may be round or oval, pink, red, brown, or darker than the surrounding skin. On deeper skin tones, colour change can be subtle, while scaling, itch, and a slightly raised border may be easier to notice. One patch can slowly enlarge, and nearby patches may join. Similar-looking rashes can come from eczema, irritation, or other infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Keep the area clean and dry, wash your hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, hairbrushes, or sports equipment. Change damp clothing promptly and wash fabrics that touch the patch regularly. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose a topical antifungal; use it for the advised course even if the itch settles early. Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, involves the scalp or nails, returns repeatedly, or has not started improving with appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care for marked pain, pus, rapidly increasing warmth, fever, or facial or eye involvement. A clinician may examine the border and take a skin sample when the diagnosis is uncertain.
