What should you know about early stage Bowen's disease?

It often appears as a slowly enlarging, persistent patch that may be red, pink, brown, scaly, crusted, or slightly thickened. It can occur on sun-exposed skin but may develop elsewhere. A biopsy may be needed because eczema, psoriasis, irritation, and other lesions can look similar. Bowen's disease has not invaded deeper tissues at this stage, but untreated abnormal cells can extend beyond the surface over time. Sun-damaged skin can increase the background risk of abnormal skin changes.

Arrange a skin examination with a dermatologist, especially when a patch persists, changes, bleeds, or fails to respond to ordinary moisturiser. Treatment depends on the lesion's size, site, thickness, and your general health. Options may include a prescribed cream such as topical 5-fluorouracil, freezing with cryotherapy, or photodynamic therapy. Do not pick the area or apply leftover steroid or wart treatments without advice. Use shade, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin.

Book prompt medical care for a new or changing patch that persists. Seek earlier review if it becomes painful, repeatedly bleeds, ulcerates, rapidly thickens, or develops a firm lump. These changes can signal deeper involvement and should not be judged from a photograph alone.

Ask whether the diagnosis needs a biopsy, which treatment fits the location, how the skin may heal, and how follow-up will check for new lesions.
