Early signs of strep throat

Strep throat is an infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria in the throat. The illness can make the tonsils look inflamed, sometimes with white patches or streaks. A child may also have headache, nausea, stomach pain, or reduced appetite. Cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and red eyes are more suggestive of a viral throat illness, although symptoms can overlap.

A sore throat is a common presentation of strep throat, but the symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may examine the throat and neck and decide whether a throat swab or other test is appropriate.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Warm drinks or cool liquids may soothe the throat. Avoid sharing cups, utensils, or toothbrushes while an infectious throat illness is being considered, and wash hands after coughing or sneezing.

Arrange a GP Consultation when symptoms are sudden, significant, or do not settle, especially if fever and swollen neck glands occur without a cough. Do not start leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on assessment and the prescribed medicine should be taken as directed.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked drowsiness. Seek prompt advice if a fever persists, symptoms worsen quickly, or the person is unusually unwell.

Ask whether the throat needs testing, whether symptoms fit strep throat or Tonsillitis, how to manage pain and fluids, and whether Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate. Ask when it is safe to return to school or work and which changes should trigger reassessment.
