What should you know about early signs of scarlet fever?

Scarlet fever is an illness associated with infection such as Strep Throat. Early symptoms commonly include a sore throat, fever, headache, swollen neck glands and feeling generally unwell. A rash can then appear as fine, red and rough to touch, often beginning on the chest or stomach before spreading. The tongue may look unusually red and textured. Skin colour can affect how easy a rash is to see, so texture and the overall symptom pattern are useful clues.

Arrange a GP assessment if a child or adult has a sore throat with fever and a new rough rash. Mention recent contact with someone ill, medicine allergies and the timing of each symptom. A clinician may examine the throat and decide whether Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate. Encourage fluids and rest, use only age-appropriate symptom medicines as directed, and avoid sharing cups, cutlery or towels until you have advice about reducing spread.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, a rapidly worsening rash, or a child who is difficult to wake. Obtain prompt medical advice when fever persists, throat pain prevents drinking, or swollen glands are becoming very painful. A rash with unusual bruising, bleeding or purple spots needs urgent assessment rather than watchful waiting.
