Early signs of dementia in women

Short answer
Early dementia in women may involve continuing changes in memory, communication, judgement or everyday tasks that were previously familiar.

Patterns worth noticing
Possible changes include repeating questions, losing the thread of a conversation, forgetting appointments, struggling with recipes or shopping, or becoming unsure about familiar routes. A person may find organising family responsibilities, personal care or household finances more difficult. Some women compensate for a while by relying on notes or relatives, so the change may be clearer to someone close to them. Dementia is only one possible explanation: grief, depression, sleep problems, medication effects, thyroid illness, hearing loss and other conditions can affect thinking. Persistent Memory Problems should be assessed in context.
How to prepare for an assessment
Record concrete examples, changes in independence and the person’s usual abilities. Encourage a GP Consultation and take a current medicine list. With consent, invite a relative or friend who can describe changes across settings. Keep routines predictable, use calendars and reminders, and check that medicines, cooking and finances are being managed safely. A Mental Health Assessment may help explore depression, anxiety or distress that can mimic or worsen cognitive symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange review when symptoms affect safety, relationships, work, medicines, money or self-care. Seek urgent help for sudden confusion, new weakness, difficulty speaking, a severe headache, collapse or a rapid decline after illness. New Urinary Incontinence with confusion, fever or weakness also needs prompt assessment. A gradual pattern should still be discussed early, because identifying treatable contributors can improve support and planning.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which physical, medication, sleep and mood-related causes should be considered, what support is available, and which daily activities need a safety plan now.

Questions people ask
Can stress or menopause-related symptoms look similar?
Several health and life changes can affect concentration and memory, so persistent or worsening symptoms deserve a clinician’s assessment rather than a self-diagnosis.
Should a family member come to the appointment?
With the person’s agreement, a trusted relative can provide useful examples and help remember the clinician’s advice.
