Early pregnancy pins and needles in hands: what to know

Pins and needles describes tingling, prickling, or reduced feeling. It may follow sleeping on an arm, keeping a wrist bent, repetitive hand use, or anxiety-related fast breathing. Swelling around the wrist can also irritate a nerve and cause hand symptoms; note which fingers are affected and whether symptoms are worse at night.

Persistent or spreading symptoms can have other causes, including peripheral neuropathy, vitamin B12 deficiency, hypothyroidism, or type 2 diabetes. A panic disorder or generalised anxiety disorder may produce tingling during episodes of intense fear or rapid breathing. The sensation alone cannot distinguish these causes.

Change position, gently move your fingers and wrist, and avoid leaning on the affected arm. Keep the wrist in a neutral position during sleep and take breaks from repeated gripping or keyboard work. Slow your breathing if you notice it has become rapid, using a comfortable pace without forcing deep breaths.

Arrange a routine review if tingling keeps returning, lasts after changing position, affects grip, or interferes with sleep. A clinician may examine sensation and strength and consider blood tests based on your history. Do not start high-dose vitamins without advice.

Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, confusion, severe headache, loss of balance, or vision change; these can be signs of stroke or a transient ischaemic attack. Seek urgent help for rapidly progressive weakness, severe neck pain, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask whether the pattern fits nerve pressure, whether blood tests are appropriate, and how to protect your wrist during sleep and work. Mention diabetes or thyroid history, dietary restrictions, new medicines, neck pain, weakness, and episodes of rapid breathing.
