Early pregnancy heartburn relief: what to know

Short answer
Early pregnancy heartburn relief usually starts with smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and checking medicines with a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Large meals or lying down soon after eating
- Medicine check
- Ask a clinician or pharmacist before using a heartburn product
What heartburn can mean
Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the food pipe. Pregnancy-related hormonal changes can relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe, while a growing uterus may later add pressure. Early symptoms can still be uncomfortable and may be worse after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down.
Occasional heartburn is different from persistent or severe symptoms. Heartburn can occur with acid reflux, while gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can also cause upper-abdominal discomfort. These conditions need assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
Ways to ease it
Try eating smaller portions more often and remain upright for a while after meals. Identify foods and drinks that trigger symptoms, avoid eating close to bedtime, and loosen clothing that presses on your abdomen. Raising the upper part of your sleeping position may help night symptoms; avoid lying completely flat straight after eating.
Ask a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor before taking an antacid or acid-reducing medicine, including products you used before pregnancy. Tell them how far along you are and list supplements or prescribed medicines, because some products are unsuitable or can affect absorption of other medicines. More guidance is available under Acid Reflux Medication.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if symptoms are frequent, disturb sleep, make eating difficult, or do not improve with simple measures. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting. Chest pain in pregnancy should not be assumed to be heartburn.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which treatment is suitable at your stage of pregnancy, whether an existing medicine should be changed, and what symptoms would require urgent review. Mention trouble swallowing, ongoing nausea, weight loss, or pain that feels different from your usual burning.
