Early Impetigo Symptoms: What to Know

Impetigo is a surface bacterial infection. An early patch may itch, feel tender, or simply look red. Small blisters can then become cloudy, open, and leave shallow moist areas with a characteristic yellow-brown crust. The changes may occur around the nose and mouth, on the hands, or wherever skin has been scratched or irritated. Crusting skin has several possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

The infection can spread by direct skin contact or through shared fabrics and personal items. Children may scratch without noticing, which can move the infection from one area to another. A clinician will consider the pattern, speed of change, symptoms, and any underlying skin irritation.

Clean affected skin gently with lukewarm water, pat it dry, cover it loosely if advised, and wash hands after contact. Keep nails short and avoid sharing towels, bedding, clothing, razors, or cosmetics. Arrange an assessment rather than using an old prescription. Treatment may involve topical antibiotic therapy for a limited area, while antibiotics for skin infection may be considered when lesions are widespread or need treatment beyond a cream.

Contact a clinician promptly if lesions are multiplying, spreading quickly, becoming increasingly painful, or accompanied by fever or unusual tiredness. Get urgent help when swelling or redness approaches the eye, there is eye pain or a change in vision, or facial swelling is severe. Extra caution is appropriate for infants, people with reduced immunity, and anyone with a condition that makes wounds harder to heal.

Ask what other conditions could resemble the rash, whether you should keep it covered, how long to avoid close contact, and which symptoms would require review. Tell the clinician when the first spot appeared, whether anyone else is affected, and what products or medicines have touched the skin.
