Early Impetigo on Lips: What to Know

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection affecting the surface of the skin. Near the mouth, you may notice redness, tiny fluid-filled blisters, moist erosions, or crusting that enlarges over a short time. It can occur on the lip edge or nearby skin; a sore inside the mouth is less typical. Scratching, rubbing, nasal discharge, or an existing irritated patch can help bacteria reach broken skin. Atopic dermatitis can create a vulnerable skin barrier, but a crusted lip sore is not automatically impetigo.

Avoid picking the crust or sharing towels, face cloths, lip products, cups, or utensils while the area is being assessed. Gentle handwashing after touching the sore helps reduce transfer to the eyes, nose, and other people.

Arrange a clinical assessment, especially if new spots are appearing or the sore is spreading. Keep the area clean with lukewarm water and pat it dry; do not scrub, squeeze, or apply leftover medicines. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for a small, limited area or antibiotics for skin infection when the infection is more extensive or difficult to treat locally. Use any prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not share it.

Seek prompt medical care if redness or swelling is moving toward the eye, the eyelid becomes involved, pain is marked, fever develops, the child seems unwell, or the skin is rapidly changing. Same-day advice is also sensible when the person has reduced immunity, the sore keeps returning, or several household members develop similar lesions. Urgent assessment is needed for eye pain, vision change, or severe facial swelling.

Ask whether the appearance fits impetigo or another lip problem, whether a swab is useful, which areas should receive treatment, and how to reduce spread at home or school. Mention recent eczema, cold sores, new skin products, medicines, allergies, and any fever or eye symptoms.
