What should you know about early growth scan in pregnancy?

The sonographer measures parts of the baby, such as the head, abdomen and thigh bone, then compares the pattern with expected growth for the stage of pregnancy. The appointment may also review the baby's movement, heartbeat, position, placenta and amniotic fluid. A single measurement is not a diagnosis; the care team may compare it with earlier scans and examine the trend over time.

Your clinician may suggest an earlier or repeat scan because of a previous pregnancy concern, a medical condition, a difference in the size of the uterus, or a concern about the baby's growth. The scan does not predict every aspect of health and cannot replace routine antenatal care.

Ask whether you need a full bladder, bring your antenatal notes, and tell the team about pain, bleeding or reduced movements before the appointment. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen. Afterward, ask what was measured, whether the findings match the expected pattern, and when the next review is planned. A growth scan is different from a 3D or 4D ultrasound, which is mainly used to create more detailed images.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, or a clear reduction in your baby's usual movements. Do not wait for a scheduled scan when these symptoms occur. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe breathing difficulty or intense persistent pain.
