What should you know about early Crohn's disease?

Crohn's disease is inflammation that can affect parts of the digestive tract. Early symptoms vary: some people notice repeated diarrhoea, cramping or pain, urgency, bloating, or weight loss; others mainly feel tired or eat less. Abdominal pain is a common presentation of Crohn's disease, but abdominal pain alone has many possible explanations. Blood or mucus in stool, mouth ulcers, or symptoms outside the gut can also be relevant. A symptom diary can record stool changes, pain location, appetite, fever, and possible food triggers without assuming a diagnosis.

Arrange a GP Consultation if bowel changes persist, recur, disturb sleep, or affect eating and daily activities. The clinician may ask about family history, travel, medicines, and previous infections, then examine you. A Blood Test can look for signs such as inflammation or anaemia, but blood results do not confirm Crohn's disease on their own. Do not start restrictive diets or stop prescribed medicines without advice; keep fluids up and choose foods you tolerate while waiting for assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, fainting, confusion, or heavy rectal bleeding. Prompt assessment is also sensible if diarrhoea comes with dehydration, high fever, or marked weakness. These warning signs need attention because inflammation, bleeding, or another abdominal problem may require treatment.
