Earache and wax build-up

Earwax normally protects the ear canal. When it accumulates, it may press against the canal or eardrum and cause a blocked sensation, muffled hearing, ringing, itching, or discomfort. Sharp pain, fever, fluid from the ear, or feeling ill can point to another problem such as infection. Wax symptoms do not confirm that wax is the cause of every earache.

Keep the ear dry and leave the canal alone. Do not use cotton buds, hairpins, or candles, because these can push wax deeper or injure the canal. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether wax-softening drops are suitable; do not use drops if you may have a perforated eardrum unless a clinician says they are safe. If blockage continues, professional ear wax removal can clear it and allow the ear to be examined.

Seek medical advice for ongoing pain, new hearing loss, discharge, fever, dizziness, or symptoms after putting something in the ear. Get urgent help for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or swelling behind the ear. An examination is especially sensible when the cause is uncertain or symptoms affect a young child.

Ask whether wax is actually blocking the canal, whether the eardrum can be seen, which softening product is safe for you, and which removal method is recommended.
