Earache from water in the ear

Moisture held against the canal lining can lead to softness, itching, and irritation. The sensation may be fullness, tenderness, muffled hearing, or pain when the outer ear moves. Earwax can trap water and make blockage more noticeable. A middle-ear infection is deeper and may follow a cold, while sinus or throat inflammation can refer discomfort to the ear.

Pain that continues after the ear is dry, becomes stronger, or is joined by discharge should be checked rather than treated as simple trapped water.

Let the ear drain by tilting your head and gently pulling the outer ear back and up. Dry only the outside with a towel. Do not use cotton buds, sharp objects, forceful suction, or unapproved drops. Keep water out while washing and avoid swimming until the discomfort has cleared. If you normally can take a suitable pain reliever, follow the package directions and check for interactions with your medicines.

Arrange a medical review for ongoing pain, new hearing loss, swelling, intense itching, or fluid from the ear. Get urgent help for severe dizziness, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, a severe headache, or feeling very unwell. Earlier advice is sensible if you have diabetes, immune suppression, ear surgery history, or a known eardrum problem.
