What should you know about ear wax in an otoscope?

An otoscope provides light and magnification so a clinician can inspect the ear canal. Wax may appear yellow, brown, or dark and can be soft or firm. Its presence does not by itself prove that it is causing hearing difficulty or discomfort. If wax obscures the eardrum, the clinician may need to clear it before checking for another explanation.

Tell the clinician about hearing changes, pain, itching, discharge, or ringing. Do not try to improve the view with cotton buds or other objects. Depending on the findings, the clinician may recommend observation, softening drops, or removal by an appropriate method. Children may need a child health consultation, while adults can usually discuss the result during a GP consultation.

Arrange medical review for persistent hearing loss, significant earache, discharge, dizziness, or a sudden change in hearing. Seek prompt care if severe pain, bleeding, or marked balance problems follow an examination or attempted cleaning. A clinician should know about previous eardrum damage or ear surgery before anything is placed in the canal.
