Ear Pain While Pregnant: What to Know

Pregnancy can coincide with nasal congestion, which may affect the eustachian tube and create pressure or fullness in the ear. Earwax buildup, a middle-ear infection, or sinusitis can also cause pain. Sometimes discomfort felt in the ear is referred from the throat, jaw, or teeth rather than coming from the ear itself.

The symptom alone does not identify the cause. A clinician may ask about hearing, discharge, fever, recent colds, and the stage of pregnancy before looking into the ear.

Rest, drink fluids, and use a warm—not hot—cloth over the outer ear if it feels soothing. Keep water and cotton buds out of the ear canal. Check any pain medicine, nasal spray, or decongestant with your maternity team, doctor, or pharmacist before using it.

If an infection is found, the clinician can choose treatment appropriate for pregnancy. Do not use leftover medicine or begin antibiotic treatment without advice.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening pain, discharge, new hearing loss, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent care for severe dizziness, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, or a severe headache with feeling very unwell.
