Ear pain when water enters the ear

Water touching sensitive skin in the outer canal can sting, especially after scratching, using earbuds, or swimming. Moisture trapped around wax may produce fullness or temporarily muffled hearing. If pain is worse when the outer ear is moved, the canal may be inflamed. A Middle Ear Infection is deeper behind the eardrum, so water entering the canal is not itself proof of that condition. Congestion from a Common Cold can also make pressure sensations more noticeable.

Tilt the affected ear downward and gently dry the outside. Let water drain naturally; do not use cotton buds, hairpins, or forceful probing. Keep the ear dry until discomfort settles, and use ear protection during bathing if a clinician has advised it. Avoid drops unless a healthcare professional confirms they are suitable, particularly if you have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, surgery history, or discharge. Seek medical advice if pain persists after drying, returns after swimming, or comes with itching, discharge, hearing change, fever, or swelling. Get urgent help for severe pain, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, or swelling behind the ear.
