Ear pain when blowing your nose

The Eustachian tube runs between the middle ear and the upper throat. Congestion from a Common Cold or Sinusitis can narrow it, so a forceful blow creates a sudden pressure difference. This may cause aching, popping, or temporary muffled hearing. Earwax buildup can add a blocked sensation. A Middle Ear Infection may also cause pain and can be accompanied by fever, reduced hearing, or drainage. Ear pain by itself does not identify one cause.

Blow one nostril at a time with your mouth slightly open and use gentle pressure. Saline nasal rinsing may loosen mucus when performed with safe, clean water and the product instructions. Drink fluids and rest while a respiratory infection settles. Do not insert anything into the ear or repeatedly force it to pop. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief and congestion treatment. Antibiotic Treatment is not appropriate for every cause.

Get medical advice if the pain lasts, recurs, or follows a loud pressure event, or if you notice hearing loss, fever, discharge, or spinning dizziness. Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, facial weakness, or swelling behind the ear.
