Ear pain when burping: home remedies and when to get help

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear with the back of the nose and helps equalise pressure. A burp can briefly alter pressure in the throat and middle ear, making an already sensitive ear hurt or feel blocked. A cold or Sinusitis can cause swelling around this passage. Earwax buildup can also create fullness, although it does not explain every pressure-related ache. A Middle Ear Infection may cause deeper pain, reduced hearing, fever, or fluid from the ear.

Swallow gently, sip water, or yawn to encourage normal pressure movement. Treat nasal congestion with fluids and rest, and avoid forceful attempts to pop the ear. Keep objects and cotton buds out of the ear. A warm cloth over the outer ear may be soothing. Use an age-appropriate pain reliever only if it is safe for you and follow its label; a pharmacist can check interactions and medical conditions. Do not start Antibiotic Treatment without an assessment.

Arrange medical advice if pain persists, keeps returning, or comes with hearing change, fever, dizziness, swelling, or discharge. Seek urgent care for severe worsening pain, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, or redness and swelling behind the ear.
