Ear pain from water after swimming: what to know

Swimming can leave a film of water against the canal skin. Rubbing, scratching or repeated wetting can damage that barrier and lead to inflammation. If wax is present, it may absorb water and block sound. Earache can also come from behind the eardrum, including Middle Ear Infection, particularly when congestion accompanies the pain.

Turn the affected ear downward and gently tug the outer ear to encourage drainage. Pat the outside dry and, if needed, use cool air from a hairdryer held at a safe distance. Do not use drops if discharge is present unless recommended.

Book an assessment when pain persists, keeps returning or is accompanied by blocked hearing.
