What should you know about ear nickel allergy?

The earlobe, piercing channel, or skin behind the ear may react after exposure to earrings, backs, or jewellery plating. Symptoms can appear after repeated contact rather than immediately, and the rash may extend slightly beyond the contact area. Moisture, friction, and scratching can keep the skin inflamed. A rash does not prove that nickel is the cause; infection, irritation, or another metal can look similar.

Remove the suspected item if your clinician agrees, and avoid putting jewellery back through irritated skin. Keep the area gently clean and dry, and do not scratch, squeeze, or apply household remedies. A clinician may recommend a short course of a topical corticosteroid; treatment choice depends on the location and condition of the skin. Arrange medical assessment if the rash persists after avoiding the suspected jewellery, repeatedly returns, or involves a piercing that is painful or draining. Get emergency help for swelling of the lips or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread hives.
