Ear lobe tear repair: what to know

A split or stretched lobe may follow an injury, heavy jewellery, or an old piercing. During assessment, the clinician checks the amount of missing tissue, scarring, and whether the wound is fresh or healed. Repair commonly involves numbing the area, trimming damaged edges when needed, and closing the lobe with fine stitches. The final shape depends on the tear and the tissue available.

Keep a fresh wound clean and covered as advised, and avoid earrings or pressure on the lobe while it heals. Do not pick at crusts or pull the stitches. Follow instructions about washing, ointment, and stitch removal. Once healed, ask when it is suitable to wear jewellery again and whether re-piercing should be placed away from the repair line.

Contact a clinician promptly if the lobe becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if drainage, fever, or wound separation develops. Heavy bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure needs urgent assessment. Sudden swelling after a procedure can indicate bleeding or infection and should not be ignored.
