Ear infection antibiotics over the counter: what to know

Ear pain can come from inflammation, trapped fluid, irritation of the ear canal, or infection. Some infections are caused by bacteria, while others may follow a viral illness and improve without antibiotics. A clinician can examine the eardrum and ear canal, check for discharge or a perforation, and decide whether drops, tablets, monitoring, or another approach fits. Using a medicine left from an earlier illness can mask symptoms, cause side effects, or delay the right treatment.

Arrange a medical review if pain is significant, symptoms are worsening, or the problem is not settling. Keep water and cotton buds out of the ear, and do not put drops into an ear that may have a perforated eardrum unless a clinician recommends them. For comfort, follow the label for an appropriate pain reliever and consider a warm compress against the outer ear. Do not share antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe or rapidly increasing pain, new facial weakness, marked dizziness, confusion, or a severe headache with vomiting. Prompt assessment is also sensible for new hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, or symptoms in a very young child or someone with reduced immunity.
