The blisters may sit deep in the skin and appear along the sides of fingers, palms, toes, or soles. As a flare settles, the surface can shed, feel tight, and split. Heat, sweating, irritants, stress, and contact sensitivity may be relevant for some people, but a single trigger is not always found. Dry skin alone has many causes. Asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis can produce scaling or cracks, so the distribution, itch, blister pattern, and history help a clinician tell them apart.

Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat rather than rub, then apply a thick emollient while the skin is still slightly damp; repeat after handwashing.
