DVT in pregnancy symptoms: what should you know?

Deep vein thrombosis is a clot in a deep vein, commonly in a leg. During pregnancy, changes in blood flow and clotting can contribute to clot risk. Watch for swelling, warmth, redness, tenderness, tightness, or aching affecting one leg, especially when the change is new or becomes worse. Pregnancy can also cause ordinary leg discomfort, so symptoms cannot confirm a clot; a clinician may need to examine you and arrange testing.

If a clot reaches the lungs, symptoms can include sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, a racing heartbeat, faintness, or collapse. This is a medical emergency.

Contact your maternity team or urgent medical service promptly for new one-sided leg swelling, pain, warmth, or redness. Do not massage the area or delay because the discomfort seems mild. Keep a note of when symptoms began, which leg is affected, and any recent travel, immobility, illness, or procedure. Continue routine antenatal appointments; an Antenatal Care Package can include scheduled monitoring, but it does not replace urgent review of clot symptoms. Take only medicines recommended by your clinician.

Call emergency services immediately if you develop sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing blood, severe dizziness, fainting, collapse, or a rapidly worsening illness. For isolated new leg symptoms, seek same-day advice rather than waiting for the next appointment.
