Dust mite allergy rash: what should you know?

Dust mite allergy more commonly causes sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal blockage, and airway symptoms than a primary skin rash. A red, dry, scaly, or itchy eruption may instead reflect Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies, or a Drug Rash. Note whether the eruption is in skin folds, forms a ring, affects close contacts, follows a new product or medicine, or worsens with heat and sweating.

Take clear photographs as the rash changes and keep a brief record of cleaning, bedding, products, medicines, foods, heat, and contact with other affected people. Wash gently, moisturise dry skin with a fragrance-free product, and avoid scratching or adding multiple new creams. Dust-control measures may help nasal allergy symptoms, but they may not resolve a rash with another cause. A clinician can examine the pattern and select treatment.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, blistering, skin peeling, purple or painful areas, fever with a spreading rash, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. Arrange medical review for a rapidly changing eruption, signs of infection such as increasing warmth or pus, severe itch, or symptoms that persist despite gentle care. A rash after a new medicine deserves prompt advice.

Ask which features point toward eczema, contact irritation, infection, or allergy; whether testing is useful; and which treatment is appropriate for the body area involved. Bring photographs and a full list of recent medicines and products.
