Mumps commonly causes painful swelling near the cheeks or jaw because the salivary glands become inflamed. Fever, headache, muscle aches, dry mouth, and reduced appetite may accompany the swelling. Symptoms do not always follow the same pattern, and other infections can also cause swollen glands. In some people, inflammation can affect areas beyond the salivary glands, so new severe symptoms should not be dismissed as part of a routine recovery.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Avoid acidic drinks and foods if they increase salivary-gland pain. Use age-appropriate pain or fever relief only as directed and check before giving medicines to a child. Stay away from close contact and shared utensils while advised by a clinician. MMR vaccination is the main preventive measure and can be discussed when reviewing household records.

Contact a GP consultation service if jaw swelling is increasing, fever is persistent, drinking is difficult, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek urgent help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, or sudden testicular or pelvic pain. Call ahead before attending because mumps can spread through close contact.
