What should you know about DTM fungal culture?

DTM means dermatophyte test medium. A clinician may collect scale from a rash, clipped nail material, or a few hairs when ringworm or another dermatophyte infection is being considered. The sample is placed in a special medium and observed for fungal growth and a colour change. The result can take time because fungi grow gradually. A positive result supports a dermatophyte infection, while a negative result does not always exclude one if the sample was small or treatment was already used.

Follow the collection instructions and tell the clinician about antifungal creams, tablets, or shampoos used recently. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sharing towels, combs, hats, or nail tools, and do not scratch or scrape the site before sampling. Treatment depends on the body area, the appearance of the infection, and the test result. Some infections need a prescribed cream; scalp or nail disease may need medicine taken by mouth, such as oral antifungal treatment.

Arrange medical review if a suspected fungal rash is spreading, involves the scalp or nails, causes hair loss, becomes painful, or fails to improve after the advised treatment. Seek prompt care for facial or eye-area swelling, pus, fever, rapidly increasing redness, or severe tenderness. Children, people with diabetes, and anyone with a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment.

Ask which sample will be collected, when the result is expected, whether current products could affect it, and what treatment is suitable while waiting. Clarify how to prevent spread at home and what change would mean the diagnosis should be reconsidered.
