What should you know about dry wrapping eczema?

Short answer
Dry wrapping eczema means covering moisturised, affected skin with a clean, breathable layer to reduce scratching and friction, but the method should match the person’s skin and treatment plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Reduce scratching, rubbing and moisture loss from treated skin
- Material
- Clean, soft and breathable fabric
How dry wrapping works
After a suitable moisturiser is applied, a soft layer of clothing or tubular bandage can create a physical barrier over selected areas. This may make rubbing and night-time scratching less likely and can help keep emollient on the skin. It is different from wet wrapping, which uses damp layers and needs more specific guidance. Wrapping cannot replace treatment for active Atopic Dermatitis, and tight or poorly ventilated coverings can irritate skin.
Using a dry wrap thoughtfully
Wash hands, cleanse gently if needed, and apply the prescribed or recommended moisturiser before covering the area. Choose clean, soft, breathable fabric; avoid rough seams, adhesive tape and anything that restricts movement or circulation. Check the skin when the covering is removed and stop if burning, swelling, increased redness or pain appears. Keep nails short and wash reusable garments regularly. Do not place a wrap over infected, oozing or heavily crusted skin without clinical advice.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if eczema is spreading, becomes painful, develops pus, warmth, marked swelling or honey-coloured crusting, or fails to settle with the agreed plan. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a rapidly extensive rash. Repeated scratching can leave darker or lighter marks, including Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, so persistent colour change is worth discussing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which areas should be wrapped, what product should go underneath, how long the covering should stay on, and whether a child needs supervision. Show the clinician any Cracked Skin, Crusting Skin or new rash, and mention whether itching is worse at night or whether ordinary Dry Skin care has helped.

Questions people ask
Is dry wrapping the same as wet wrapping?
No. Dry wrapping uses dry clothing or bandage over moisturised skin, while wet wrapping uses damp layers and requires more careful instruction.
Can I wrap broken eczema skin?
Open, oozing or crusted areas should be checked by a clinician before wrapping because a covering may worsen irritation or hide infection.
