Dry throat and runny nose: what to know

A runny nose drains mucus forward or down the throat, which can leave the throat feeling scratchy or dry. Allergic rhinitis often presents with repeated sneezing, itching and clear discharge, while a common cold may add tiredness, mild throat discomfort or a cough. COVID-19 and influenza can also begin with upper-airway symptoms. Dust mites, pets, smoke, air conditioning and low humidity may irritate the nose and throat without an infection. Sinusitis becomes more relevant when facial pressure, thick nasal discharge or symptoms that fail to settle are present.

Sip water regularly and choose warm drinks if they soothe you. Saline nasal spray or a gentle saline rinse can clear mucus; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Rest, avoid smoke and keep bedroom air comfortably humidified. If a pattern follows pollen, dust or an animal, reducing exposure may help. A pharmacist can discuss suitable allergy or cold treatments, taking account of pregnancy, age, medical conditions and other medicines. Do not share nasal sprays, and follow the product directions.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, inability to swallow fluids, confusion, severe weakness or chest pain. Arrange medical advice if fever is high or persistent, symptoms are worsening, dehydration develops, or facial pain and thick discharge continue. Get advice sooner if you have a weakened immune system or a serious long-term condition.
