Dry throat and sneezing: what should you know?

Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes, and a dry or irritated throat from mouth breathing or mucus drainage. Dust mites and pets may trigger symptoms in particular settings. A common cold may add a runny nose, tiredness, mild throat discomfort, or a changing mucus pattern. Smoke, air conditioning, fragrances, and low humidity can irritate the throat without causing an infection. Notice whether symptoms follow exposure, occur seasonally, or begin with other cold symptoms.

Sip water regularly and choose warm fluids if they feel soothing. Use a humidifier that is cleaned as directed, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and breathe through your nose when possible. Saline nasal spray or a gentle saline rinse may reduce nasal irritation; use prepared sterile or appropriately treated water for rinsing. If an allergy pattern is clear, a pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable and how to use it. Rest and reduce close contact if a cold seems likely.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or difficulty swallowing saliva. Arrange a medical review if symptoms are severe, keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle as expected. An allergy that begins suddenly after food, medicine, or an insect sting needs urgent assessment, especially with wheezing or widespread hives.
