Dry skin under a mustache

Hair can trap cleanser, food, saliva and grooming products against the skin. Repeated wiping or shaving can damage the surface barrier, causing tightness, flakes, redness or stinging. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema and Psoriasis may also present with facial scaling. Rinse the skin thoroughly with lukewarm water and use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser. Pat the mustache and skin dry instead of rubbing. Apply a bland moisturizer to the skin beneath the hair, working it through clean facial hair with washed hands. Stop new oils, waxes, dyes and fragranced products while symptoms are active. If shaving worsens the area, reduce passes and use a clean razor; do not apply medicated creams close to the lips without advice.

Seek an appointment for crusting, oozing, painful cracks, marked swelling, spreading redness, hair breakage or symptoms that keep returning. Prompt assessment is appropriate if the rash reaches the eyes or lips, or if swelling affects breathing or swallowing. Do not assume persistent flakes are only dry skin, particularly when self-care has not helped.
