What should you know about dry skin under beard?

Beard hair can make it harder to see scale and harder to rinse or moisturise the skin beneath it. Hot water, frequent shampooing, fragranced oils, styling products and scratching may worsen flaking. Itch and scale can occur with ordinary Dry Skin, while Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis or Asteatotic Eczema may produce ongoing inflammation. Redness around individual hairs, tenderness or pustules points toward a different problem and should be examined rather than treated as simple dryness.

Clean the beard and underlying skin with a gentle, fragrance-free product, using fingertips to reach the skin without scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry; leaving the area damp can increase irritation. Apply a small amount of bland moisturiser to the skin beneath the hair, separating the beard if needed. Emollient Therapy may help explain suitable barrier care. Wash grooming tools regularly, avoid picking scale and pause new oils or balms until you know whether they irritate you.

Arrange a review when flaking continues, spreads beyond the beard, causes hair loss, or does not improve with gentle care. Seek prompt attention for painful swelling, pus, crusting, warmth, fever or rapidly worsening redness.
