What should you know about dry skin type?

Short answer
Dry skin type means the skin barrier loses moisture easily, causing tightness, roughness, flaking or sensitivity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What dry skin type can involve
You may notice fine flakes, dull texture, itching, small cracks or discomfort after washing. Cold air, low humidity, hot water, frequent cleansing and fragranced products can strip surface oils. Dryness is a symptom pattern rather than a diagnosis by itself. Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can also present with dry, scaly skin, so the distribution, appearance and other symptoms matter.
Ways to support the skin barrier
Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser where needed. Pat rather than rub, then apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply after handwashing or bathing, and choose clothing that does not scratch irritated areas. An emollient routine can soften scale and reduce water loss; see Emollient Therapy for more detail. Avoid picking flakes or layering many new products at once.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology assessment if dryness persists despite consistent moisturising, repeatedly cracks or bleeds, spreads quickly, or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt care for warmth, increasing pain, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness, which can signal infection or a stronger inflammatory reaction.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits simple dry skin or a condition such as eczema, psoriasis or contact dermatitis; which ingredients to avoid; and whether a prescription treatment is appropriate for the affected area.

Questions people ask
Can dry skin type become itchy?
Yes. Barrier disruption can expose nerve endings and make skin feel itchy, especially after washing or in dry air.
Is dry skin type always eczema?
No. Dryness can occur without eczema, although persistent inflammation, marked itch or recurring scale deserves an assessment.
